Hagel Retirement Results in Ratings Change for Nebraska Race By Greg Giroux
Wed Sep 12, 6:30 AM ET

Nebraska Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel’s decision to retire rather than seek re-election in 2008 will set up a wide-open contest that probably will be among the most vigorously contested Senate races in the nation.

Hagel’s retirement announcement, which he disclosed in Omaha on Monday, has prompted CQPolitics.com to change the rating of the Nebraska Senate rate to “Leans Republican” from “Safe Republican.” The new rating gives the Republicans a small overall edge but considers the Nebraska race to be highly competitive.

Nebraska usually votes heavily Republican in presidential election years. But Democratic candidates for the Senate have enjoyed success in recent elections. Hagel himself noted this Monday in saying that his seat cannot be considered safely Republican.

The race rating could change again in the coming days and weeks, when the candidate field will take shape. The top Democratic candidate would be Bob Kerrey, a former Nebraska governor and senator who is considering a return to political life. The Republican field already includes state Attorney General Jon Bruning, who planned to challenge Hagel in a primary election if the senator sought re-election. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns, a popular former Nebraska governor, also is considering the race. The GOP contest could also include former Rep. Hal Daub and businessman Tony Raimondo.
