That's why I said that it is still a possibility that, should the confederation emerge as the political solution to Iraq, the Sunnis might be amenable to a US military presence on their part of the country. However, that decision would be controversial, and it certainly isn't a slam dunk deal like it is for the Kurdistan region.

Nobody can tell if that confederation can emerge until AQI is put out of business. Political deals are not going to get done while Al Qaeda is burning the house down around everybody's ears. It is always easier to foment a war than try to prevent it; just look at the Balkans in the 1990s.

That's why it is absolutely in US interests to hand AQI an unequivocal defeat in Iraq.
