Albert, I don't think so. I am not going to make a blanket statement
and say this is going to work everywhere, all the time. IMO, the changes
this technology requires the Bells to make is less painful than others.
(This is only an opinion but I think its common sense too.)

Nothing is free. It is true that when you solve one problem somewhere,
you can create another problem somewhere else. Right now, I think the
biggest problem needing solved is in the local loop. Moreover, from
a technical point of view, I think it is the most challenging problem
to solve (although I am not an EE). The S/W challenges are formidable
as well and to an extent, are part of the infrastructure equation.

I assume you read the Byte article you posted. What specifically is
bothering you? I have been wrong many times and am possibly
overlooking something.
