I think this is petty and short sighted because Apple was trying to create the impression that they're looking out for the best interests of their core customers. By cutting out iTunes from the equation they're just giving another reason for those core customers to be irritated.

If they had included iTunes in the deal, you could have made the same argument and said they should have given back cash (or the full $200). You arent going to satisfy everybody, and this move by Apple seems to have quieted most of the complaining.
