Excellent review, MM! I hope others will do the same. I posted a review on PFP of the new Tommy Lee Jones Movie. The reason I did that was because of the politics included. I want to keep that separate from here so that this thread does not have that tone. I didn't believe Bale's character in this movie. As you said, just too cold. I think Van Heflin probably did a better job in the earlier version. Derek had commented about the wound earlier. The Fonda character gets shot in the gut, we see the bullet removed, and the next day he is walking around like nothing had happened. That was jarring. lots of plinks and plunks from bullet strikes. Yes, I noticed this also. The first movie that I remember doing a good job of this was "Saving Private Ryan." I guess they are all now adding this in. SPOILER WARNING!!!! IF YOU PLAN TO SEE THIS MOVIE READ NO FURTHER. The ending didn't work for me. I expected the son to get involved. We knew from the start that he was an excellent shot. The ending was too "stagy." I don't know if they did it as a downer because they wanted it nihilistic, but I think they missed a better ending. Here's my version. When Bale puts Crowe on the train, Foster shoots him in the back once. Crowe gets off the train and Foster hands him his gun. Crowe straps it on and the son shoots Foster in the back with his rifle. As the other bad guys wheel to respond, the son kills them. Crowe stands there and watches. The son then tells Crowe to get on the train and he does. The son then rushes to his father's side and Bale is shown as still alive. The rest of the scene with the whistle and the horse responding plays out the same. Much more satisfying ending.
