The best use of futures is locking in prices for when you need the money or product.

Back in 1954 my father and 9 other guys each put $10,000 in a futures account and let the elevator manager run the account. They doubled their money and let it ride. It doubled again but they lost it all when the manager took the $400k and went to South America.
