I watched East West again today. I always show it as a companion to Animal Farm- since it really shows some of the shocking cruelty and starkness of the USSR. It's hard to really get that across to kids- and the movie also shows you several classes of people represented in Animal Farm- we get a brief look at the Orthodox Church (Moses the raven); we have an old member of the bourgeoisie (Mollie); and we see lots of the proletariat (Boxer), as well as the party upper crust (the pigs), and Stalin is mentioned (Napoleon) and the KGB is in evidence (the dogs)- and we even have a French leftist initially sympathetic to the USSR.

This is an amazingly good movie. It grabs you from the beginning, and never lets go. It's based on a true story.
