I heard that Fred Thompson, utterly lacking in distinction, is number two in the Republican polls.

That's just sad.

Rove knew that Dubya had to have a war in order to cement reelection. Republicans need war, fear mongering, hatred of someone (reds, commies, islamo something or others, gays, the french, etc.) in order to stay in power. When people think rationally, they mostly vote for non Republicans.
