Right, and apparently the macbook non-pro can't. I read that somewhere, not sure what the issue is there.

true. all I am paying for is Apple support if I buy the apple monitor. The question is how much is that worth. Probably a few hundred, to me but maybe not 30% which is what the differential is.

Its a sad testament to Dell that their once premier customer support has now become a deterrent to ordering from them.
