all I am paying for is Apple support if I buy the apple monitor.

Highly subjective area here, but you are also paying for the quality of the display.

For artsy stuff, I use Apple, for other purposes, HP & Viewsonic.

Looking at smaller monitors (19-21") I don't care for Dell monitors, and Viewsonic looks sharp, but colors seem a bit off. HP monitors are nicest, but I had a couple of them blow their power supply recently. (Opened one up - looks like swollen capacitors...)

I like how the Apple monitors look best.

Best, if possible, to compare same image side by side and decide which one fills your needs best.

Also consider multiple monitors (assuming the computer supports that and it is compatible with what you are doing).
