SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 8, 1997-- DVD board manufacturing industry leader E4 today announced the availability of CoolView 3D, the company's new, ultra-high performance 2D/3D graphics and video accelerator. CoolView 3D is the ideal graphics subsystem to combine with the onslaught of new video and DVD products available on the market today. CoolView 3D is available now for OEMs and will ship to retail markets in November. Retail pricing will be $199.
"E4 is entering the booming 3D market at just the right time and with a really solid offering," said Dr. Jon Peddie, President of JonPeddie Associates in Tiburon, Calif., the leading market research firm tracking digital media technology. "This year we predict over 42 million 3D controllers will be shipped, mostly medium to high- performance. If E4's graphics products are as cool as their DVD lineup, this market should welcome its entry."
CoolView 3D utilizes the industry's newest Direct3D and OpenGL accelerator, the RIVA128 chip, from Nvidia and SGS-Thomson. It provides fastest in its class Windows 2D and 3D acceleration, high quality MPEG video playback, PCI and AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) bus support, and Internet virtual world acceleration.
"E4 knows how to advance the standard for video quality, and with the RIVA128 providing benchmark winning 2D/3D acceleration, CoolView 3D has the best of everything - at the resolution and frame rate today's customers demand," said Tim Chambers, director of graphics products at SGS-THOMSON Microelectronics. "E4 has provided a really innovative and compelling combination."
E4 selected the RIVA128 technology for its unparalleled video quality and scaling capability. "We are extremely excited about our new CoolView 3D graphics and video accelerator" said E4's vice president of sales and marketing, Joe Monastiero. "We canvassed the entire graphics chip industry for the best combination of 2D, 3D and video capabilities and found that the RIVA128 chip easily outdistanced its competitors. CoolView 3D is the cornerstone of our move into the hotly contested graphics board business."
CoolView 3D's 230MHz RAMDAC supports Windows resolutions up to 1600 x 1200 and flicker-free refresh rates up to 160Hz. The board will be offered with optional, low-cost video capture capability to take advantage of the burgeoning videoconferencing market. Other options will include a port to power a video camera directly from the PC, eliminating the need for bulky power adapters and an additional power outlet. CoolView 3D comes standard with 4MBs of high-performance SGRAM, with a 128-bit superhighway to the processor.
CoolView 3D also includes drivers to support Microsoft's latest DirectX build, release 5, and OpenGL support for Windows NT. With E4's optimized CoolView 3D video drivers, the board will provide the best full-screen, full-motion DVD and video playback quality in the industry.
In addition to CoolView 3D, E4 offers the industry's widest selection of DVD playback products, each of which includes optimized CoolView 3D interface drivers. E4's recently announced Cool3DVD, based on the new Mpact 2 chip, offers end-users the ultimate, low- cost graphics/video/ DVD subsystem. Cool3DVD is available now to OEMs and system integrators.
