The issues with iran are very complex and the US has not always been open to negotiations with that country and its former governments. They are a clear danger to the mideast balance of power. Sunnis are proving that with their acquiesence to israelis attack on the alweite optometrist. If iran gets nukes all the arab states will want them too. Not a good thing. They have no fear of israel with hundreds of nukes but they know the consequences of iran with one or two for them. As for troublemaking in iran, sure there is some of that. But there is also aiding shiaa brethern from being taken over again by sunnis or US. US needs to be careful as possible to not engage militias. Unlike al quaeda shiaa militias are part of sectarian war. Al quaeda may have set the sectarian battle in motion but has little to do with it now, especially since tribes have split up from them.
Also given threat of iran, peace between israel and palestine becomes more important and more feasible. Get the Jew/Moslem, I/P issue off the table would immediately reduce the persian fan club and folks like hamas and hizbo.
