This leads me to two options, either do it all now and get the pain over, or wait till next September, which is a long time, and let the early adopters have at least 3-6 months of exclusivity.

I dont think that Apple will be able to afford to wait. They are going to need to have a 3G version as quickly as possible. At best, the US sales have been ok and that is in a country where 3G isnt nearly and the competition is much less fierce in the high-end.

If the 3G iPhone really is scheduled for the 1st quarter of '08, I would even considering pushing the launch date back. I dont think it is worth the public relations hit of a possible iPhone flop in Europe or pissing off your early adopters (again!) by releasing an upgrade within 4-5 months.

I am really crossing my fingers that they pull a rabbit out of the hat tomorrow and have a 3G iPhone ready to go. They would have an absolutely stellar product lineup heading into Christmas.
