this is basically the same old issue with carriers that dovetails on John Battelle's theme - "the wireless web sucks".

Carriers want to charge for services on a piecemeal basis, lock you in and other BS.

The web flourished thanks to an essentially flat rate fee structure that encouraged widespread usage since everyone paid a flat rate. If we had ISPs that had the same mindset as Verizon during the web boom, we would never be where we are today. I think we are going to suffer until the wireless players offer a completely flat rate for everything, all inclusive. Iphone is trying for that but not quite there. A lot better than a traditional contract where they ding you on every webpage you access though.
