I think the reason that they aren't using 3G is because they don't have a 3G phone ready, and the market opportunity that was there this summer might not exist if Apple waited until the 3G phone was ready.

This isn't the first time Steve has complained about the power hungry 3G chipset. He said the same thing in an interview here in the states several months ago. He wants the Phone battery life to be long and he is correct that WIFI is faster than 3G.

Since there are tons of free WIFI hotspots in the UK unlike here in the states an Edge phone could be a hit. We won't know for sure until next quarter.
