Yes, that is what she used to do.

When she was in college in New York she was accosted by a mugger when told her to hand over her purse. He had a crow bar ready to bash in her head. She looked at the guy and declined his offer.

Even in the early forties Columbia had its own subway cars. You had to show university ID to get onto a Columbia subway car. It was right on the border of the bad part of Manhattan.
