Although he could not help being aware of what his remarks might do to the market, it is worth pointing out that the context of his comment on the stock market was how much capital gains tax income the government could expect to collect. That is, he was saying that it was unrealistic to think that stock market gains would continue to finance the government.

But I am sure that investment officers in bank trust departments all over the country (and a lot of others) are reacting the way the American Legion would if he had burned the flag.
