I think you are a bit short-sighted -- this may well herald the fall of modern civilization. I don't see anyone standing up to radical islam -- Déjà vu, it's Animal Farm on a worldwide scale.

The same thing could have been said about the Rise of Adolf Hitler, everyone, particularly the English and the Americans underestimated the danger of Hitler. The biggest problem is that the weapons that may come into play are bigger, nastier and more toxic. Also the enemy is far less concerned with taking over countries and/or populations intact, as they want to take society in an entirely different direction.
