During a sound check before a radio interview, sometime in the mid '80s RR was goofing around, he said something along the lines of "My fellow Americans, I've just signed legislation outlawing Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.", unfortunately for him the tapes were rolling and this hit the news....did a lot for the Cold War that!

President Reagan, "thought" it was a sound check but it was actually broadcasted.
But the funniest part wasn't the fact it actually got broadcasted, it was the fact the Russian Ambassidor was sitting in a chair not 10 feet away...
