An excellent article in the Am. Association of Nurse Anesthetists publication for June summarized the state of the art for artificial oxygen carriers. Both Hemopure and Polyheme are discussed along with the PFC type of AOCs. The article isn't currently available on-line, but will be so in a few months: aana.com This very pragmatic view of the uses of these materials helps eliminate hype and speculation when attempting to evaluate the future of these potential products.
