One theme that Sun has presented for some time is that US/Iran should be allies not enemys and that its all the US fault in that relationship.
Certainly the US and Iran should be allies, as they were in the days of the Shah. The Iranian people are far better candidates for liberal and capitalist government than any Arab country you could name. It's the current lunatic regime that won't even observe the barest minimum of international law and courtesy (ie. don't kidnap diplomats, dont send terrorists to blow up your adversaries in other countries, don't run around kidnapping sailors in international waters, don't sign the NNP and then build nuclear weapons) and claims the world is about to end, that gets in the way.
But in Sun Tzu's view it's always the US' fault everywhere and always. I mean, the other guy is only reacting to something we did, and there's always something, right? If we ever interfered in their country, there you go. If, conversely, we left their country alone to be be mismanaged by local dictators, why, there you go again.
It is true, Saudi Arabia is plenty scary, but they did it to themselves. Got the biggest windfall in the history of the world and spent in on a baby boom and exporting Wahabbism and terrorism. During which time the US left them alone, just keep the oil flowing, that was the deal. And the population is now more nuts than the rulers. What is anybody supposed to do with this situation? Were we supposed to cut off all relations? Stop buying oil? Depose the government? What? |
