In May, the company hired William Blair & Co. to find a buyer. Mr. Stewart said many strategic and financial buyers looked at Bombay, but no one knew how to value the company.

"The process lasted a long time. We had some very interested parties, but at the end of the day, no one could put a value on the business," he said.
