Legality apart, this stuff kills people.
Yes, it does, no question.
So does alcohol. So do cars. So do cigarettes. So do swimming pools.
Again, there are two possible premises.
One is that making these things illegal restricts the access, and the consequential social ills, enough to justify the social ills being created as a sole result of the illegality.
The other is that making them legal would not change the access appreciably, would reduce funding the social ills that are being magnified by the dynamics of a large and growing black market economy, and free up resources currently used playing cops and robbers to deal with excessive, irresponsible use of these substances, bringing the problem out in the open.

Edit: Either way, overdosing can kill a person. There are a few exceptions, of course, pot being the most notable. Alcohol is not an exception. I know someone will now post that the deposits in the lungs from pot are more destructive than cigarettes (as if anyone anywhere smoked 20-40-60 joints a day), and that people drink alcohol TO HAVE FUN, while they do drugs TO GET HIGH. That last capitalized bit holds more water if you are Nixon and Linkletter talking over highballs I guess. I still haven't figured out what the hell that means. |
