Headline: RESEARCH ALERT-J.P. Morgan starts pharmaceuticals

NEW YORK, Oct 8 (Reuter) - J.P. Morgan Securities Inc said
analyst Carl Seiden started coverage of five pharmaceutical
companies on Wednesday.
-- He rated Bristol-Myers Squibb Co (NYSE:BMY) and Pfizer Inc
(NYSE:PFE) with buy ratings.
-- Bristol-Myers, which he gave a one-year target price of
$106, was off 1-1/4 to 87-3/4. He said the company should
rebound as it repolishes its reputation and is a compelling
combination of positive earnings momentum and low relative
valuation.
-- Pfizer, given a 12-month price target of $73, was down
1-2/16 to 63-13/16. He said the stock is the best in its class
and should be a core holding in any growth portfolio.
-- Pharmacia & UpJohn Inc (NYSE:PNU) was rated long-term buy
and given a 12- to 18-month target of $42. The stock was up
1/16 to 34-1/16.
-- Merck and Co Inc was rated market perform and given an
18-month price target of $110. Shares were down 1-6/16 to
101-1/16.
-- Eli Lilly (NYSE:LLY) was started with a market perform
rating. Seiden gave the stock a 12-month price target of $135.
Shares were down 3-5/16 to 128-3/4.
-- The overall stock market was weak, with the Dow Jones
Industrial Average off 90 to 8087 or more than a full
percentage point.
