On the Tiger thread I got embroiled in a discussion way over my head. I seek a place to ask a question, without inviting controversy. Is this the place ?

The question: Is cash a derivative ?

Banks create money by lending out their deposits, only to have the money loaned re-deposited.... etc. The money they create is surely derived from the original deposit. But every dollar, even those created, is worth the same. Isn't cash therefore a derivative ?
