So he did. But the Western elites were all too sophisticated to believe such stuff, and they dismissed it as mere rhetoric for the masses. Hitler, who absolutely had the number of the Brits and the French all during the 1930s, noticed this, and was careful not to disabuse the ruling classes of their illusions. He just wanted to unite the German people, he explained, and end the unfair reparations. Surely these were reasonable demands that could be settled by negotiation?
