Well, I suppose that there's an extremely outside chance that everything that rrm has said is true. On the other hand, there's the much more likely explanation that some folks remain devoutly stupid to the bitter end, no matter what facts may be presented. This behavior reminds me of the RMIL faithful. It also reminds me of a joke...

A religious man was sailing off the coast of California when a rogue wave sideswiped his boat and washed him into the Pacific. Never one to lose faith, the man (who could barely float, let alone swim) prayed to be rescued. A Coast Guard helicopter just happened to be flying by and lowered a line for the man to grab, so they could pull him from the water. "No!", the man cried. "My God will save me.", he wailed. A nearby small motorboat saw what was happening, but the man again refused to be rescued. "My God will save me.", he cried again. The helicopter had already radioed for a Coast Guard cutter to come to the scene. As the cutter glides in close to the man, they throw him a life preserver attached to a towline. The man deliberately fails to grasp the device, again stating that his faith in his God will save him. And then, the inevitable happens. The man drowns. As he's standing in front of St. Peter and the Pearly Gates to Heaven, the man wails to St. Peter, "Why didn't my God save me?". Before St. Peter can reply, a booming voice from above says " I sent a helicopter, a small boat and a Coast Guard cutter. What the Heck do you expect from me anyway?"...

Blind faith... Or obstinate foolishness... Either way, their money is long gone... But the faithful can take solace in the fact that eventually their money will be paid to some lawyer somewhere, to defend the defenseless from alleged allegations that aren't crimes until convicted in a criminal court of law...
