PR Newswire, Wednesday, October 08, 1997 at 10:14

ATLANTA, Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- OpenROUTE(R) Networks, Inc., continuing to
expand the functionality of its comprehensive line of award-winning Remote
Access products, today announced expanded capabilities for its
"ALLWays.Secure(TM)" network security portfolio. The new Virtual Private
Network (VPN) feature, which was announced here at the Networld+Interop trade
show, will first be shipped with the company's new GTX 1000 modular
Internet/Intranet access router (see related news release on GTX 1000).
The "ALLWays Secure" portfolio is the industry's broadest program for all-
in-one, bullet-proof network security. With this new VPN capability,
OpenROUTE Networks products now offer the most extensive levels of network
security including; stateful IP packet inspection, user authentication for
Remote Access users under the RADIUS protocol; and a dynamic Internal Firewall
capability.
OpenROUTE Networks' GTSecure and GTS series of routers now integrate Sun
Microsystems' Simple Key Management for IP (SKIP) technology standard. This
makes OpenROUTE Networks products interoperable with other SKIP equipped
network devices, including Sun's own SunScreen SPF and SunScreen EFS product
lines. SKIP, a proposed IETF standard, is both a packet encoding and a key
exchange mechanism. Each SKIP packet contains algorithm numbers for the
secret key computation, bulk encryption, bulk authentication and data
compression.
Robert Koch, OpenROUTE Networks' vice president for product planning and
management, said, "The delivery of OpenROUTE 3.1 fulfills the network security
initiative we announced a year ago to provide today's virtual organizations
with high performance, secure, private and encrypted connections. We believe
the combination of our software technology and SKIP functionality on a high
performance platform like the GTX 1000 clearly represents the best technology
solution in its class. We know of no other product that can deliver
modularity in a router with VPN privacy, data integrity, authenticity,
manageability and quality of service," added Koch.
"This is great news for anyone who wants to lower the cost of
communications," said Humphrey Polanen, general manager of Sun's Network
Security Products Group, Mountain View, Calif. "The availability of
OpenROUTE's VPN products, which seamlessly interoperate with our own SunScreen
products using SKIP, gives customers the ability to deploy solutions across
the enterprise, enabling totally secure, private and authenticated business
communications over the Internet." Sun and OpenROUTE Networks have
previously announced plans for joint sales and marketing activities.
VPNs connect sites within an organization's Intranet over a public network
such as the Internet. The VPN provides data encryption and authentication to
guarantee the privacy of the organization's information while it passes over
the public network. VPNs use IP Tunnels to transport packets of data between
the local router and remote locations. An IP tunnel encapsulates an IP packet
which is addressed to a network within the remote site. The inner IP packet
is usually encrypted and signed by the virtual interface before the outer IP
header is applied. This forms an opaque, authenticated envelope that can
securely transport the original packet from the local router to the remote
location. The router or other VPN gateway at the other end then checks the
packet signature to verify that the packet is not from an impostor. After it
checks, the router then sends the data to the appropriate location,
guaranteeing complete data privacy.
OpenROUTE Networks' GlobeTrotter (GT) remote access routers feature the
best price performance in their class. Single unit prices for Internet
Protocol (IP) connectivity start at only $795 per unit, which includes
hardware and software. All GT router products come standard with OpenROUTE
Networks' data compression functionality which provides data throughput
performance that is 30 to 70 percent faster than competing products. GT
products also provide a wide range of integrated network security features for
Internet and corporate Intranet applications.
All GTs feature OpenROUTE(R), the company's interoperable, standards-based
routing software. This means that GTs are compatible with networking devices
from such leading vendors as IBM, Digital and Motorola, who have licensed
OpenROUTE. GT products also come standard with the company's
"ALLWays.Connected"(TM) Guarantee," which means that they are guaranteed to
connect to products from Cisco and Ascend and all other suppliers; carry a
lifetime warranty; and are offered with a "trade up" support program to
provide investment protection. GT products can be installed in minutes and
are easily maintained and managed from central network sites. For more
