It's a pain the iPod Classic doesn't support the older OS. Usually, Apple is pretty good about making sure that everything is backward compatible, from what they told me at the Mac store. I wonder if Leopard will be backward compatible with 10.3.9 os x with a 1.2 power chip processor. They confirmed that iBook can be upgraded to Tiger, but they weren't able to confirm the upgrade pathway for the older iBook to Leopard. The genius in the back didn't have an answer. Makes me wonder about his title.<g>

Given the fact the iPod classic doesn't support the older Panther OS, I am beginning to suspect that Leopard wil only support better processors than the 1.2 power chip in her iBook right now. In that case, I smell a new Apple coming on this year and give the iBook to the kids. In that case, I would move from a 3 Mac to a 4 Mac product household - iBook, nano for the iBook, iPod for the PC, and a new iMac. I'd probably buy an iPod for the new Mac too. Plus, I'd end up buying the Tiger system for the older iBook for $129. Oh, and I would have to figure out how to get a second 1 GB RAM chip in her iBook to replace the 256 mb RAM chip under the motherboard for $99.

The possibilities never end. How many Apple devices can a family get on one home network? I could add the iPhones and iTV next year, but the next $1200 I allocate would go to a new iMac rather than those products. If I get a new iMAC one out of the way for Christmas, I'll start looking at the other opportunites next Spring.
