We do need more space exploration, but fixing human effects on the planet can happen today. The technology exists. We just have to make an effort.

Forget about the effect on the planet for a second. I'll appeal to your neo-con leanings instead. Why would you want to be dependent on the Middle East for oil, when we can become oil independent by moving to clean energy sources, such as electricity for our cars, produced at the source by wind, solar, geo-thermal, and ocean-wave power? Not only that, but if we move fast enough we can gather the lion's share of the patents and technological know-how to secure our economy for the next 100 years. If the US leads, the world will follow.

Why would you be against that?
