How can that work, uw? Have our SF guys in country, and then need American firepower, and it is not available? Or the SF guys in country all by themselves? Or have the entire Army retrained as SF folks?

Please forgive the really dumb questions but I'm really trying to understand how a different way would work....

We cannot train the entire army this way. That leaves us too vulnerable to a big land campaign. We have a land warfare capability intact. We must keep that. What we need is to improve our low-intensity warfare capability. That requires more SF, more Civil Affairs, More PSYOPS and a few other small ticket items.

You are right SF will need some support. That is why I proposed an initial draw down of only 100,000 conventional troops. That would leave enough to provide emergency tactical support to teams, normal logistical support and some key installation and personnel security.

The strategy was totally successful in El Salvador and is working in the Philippines and Columbia today...It was also working beautifully in Afghanistan before the conventional generals got there and started screwing things up. It also worked in Northern Iraq until SF was replaced there by conventional troops.
