You're probably right. They've always struck me as a little provincial for a multi-lingual, multi-cultural, multi-doctoral (in a field that tries to use logic even if only about fanciful subjects), multi-tenured at a major university, world traveled couple, but then I really don't have the experience to judge such things. I took the observation at face value and I found it interesting as an observation generally, not as an indictment of American society.
