Many respected scientists also refute much of the data compiled by their peers. It's a complicated issue with many considerations including the fact there's a financial advantage to prominent supporters like the weather guru, Al Gore. Possibly if he had more credibility in general, the skeptics of global warming hysteria would be more compelled to believe the chicken little types.

That said, agreed that it would be beneficial for the US to reduce consumption of fossil fuels; however the primary reason would be to encourage development of alternative energy in order to break US dependence on MidEast oil.

An example of other periods of panic over changing weather patterns--Europe in the early 1800s was so cold, it's referred to as the "little ice age."
