Restaurants being busy is somewhat deceiving at times. Friday and Saturday nights...the parking lots are jammed. The real measure is how much business is off during the week. How many times are the tables being turned? Is the place packed with a line out the door or just "full" for the dinner rush. Are patrons ordering drinks with dinner?

If the restaurant has a bar are the patrons stopping on the way home for a drink and skipping dinner til they get home?

I recently spoke to a person in the business in Coco Bch, Fla. Their business has died. The place has been an upscale BBQ dinner house for 30 years with a strong local trade and they're just not coming out. The owners are thinking of shutting down...

Local TV ran an interview of a restaurant owner in Sarasota. His gross sales were off 5-6% for the first time in his 10 years of ownership. That in itself wasn't that bad...but he went on to explain he had raised his prices about 10% over the last year just to offset higher costs. Without the higher prices his numbers are pretty poor....But I bet his parking lot still looks full at dinner time on Friday night....
