That said, agreed that it would be beneficial for the US to reduce consumption of fossil fuels; however the primary reason would be to encourage development of alternative energy in order to break US dependence on MidEast oil.

That's a good reason......probably it should be number one on the list.......but what's wrong with cleaning up the air as well?
