Apart from spiting Apple, what has Universal to gain by not extending DRM-free music to Apple?

It isnt just spite (though that may play a part), none of the content providers want to end up with only a single outlet for their digital offerings. It makes sense for them to handicap Apple to the extent necessary to allow for the growth of alternative platforms. Ideally, they would have liked to have music subscription service, but since that has failed to take hold, DRM free is the only answer.

Ultimately, I would think they would offer Apple the same terms, but only when competitors have managed to establish themselves.
