What is the competing technology for WiMax?

Qualcomm is trying to push for a rival 4G standard. The present 3G cell phones would obviously be a competing standard, except that the bandwidt is much lower.

Intel has been a leader of the consortium which standardized WiMax. There are other potential chip suppliers for WiMax like Samsung, Freescale,Broadcom. Maybe AMD will join in as well.

I think that WiMax will have a major impact on the world,as much as cellular phones did. I see all laptops equipped for WiMax within two years, as they do today for WiFi. In addition,Internet tablets with WiMax may become as pervasive as cell phones. It may even destroy the cell phone carrier revenue base, since VOIP & WiMax can kill the cell phone service providers.

Disclaimer. I took a position in Clearwire, a WiMax service provider.
