Don't be too hard on them, they can't help it. I would bet I've spent more money on technical resources and manuals than they have on their classroom materials. I'd also bet they are using textbooks with material older than the technical books I throw away.

Once you notice you can read a book and learn from it without having someone read it to you and tell you what to think about it, there is no limit to how far you can advance. Heck, I currently live and breath SONET, and when the next advancement comes, I won't be sitting in college listening to some teacher reading to me from a textbook whose contents are years out of date. At the least, I'll be sitting in some evil corporation conference room, reading from Xeroxed copies of engineering sheets, listening to people who came up with the new advancements, who are depending upon me to implement it.
