I agree they still distort things. But as for other industries paying taxes, they don't pay the additional gas taxes. They didn't have the "windfall profits tax" in the past. They don't face possible "carbon taxes", and they generally don't face quite as much regulation.

The subsidies are mainly on the production side. The taxes (other than the normal corporate income taxes) mainly on consumption. I'm against that sort of distortion, and would agree to unwind it, but 1 - Doing so would tend to increase oil imports, and 2 - The political movement seems to be towards greater distortion not less, particularly in terms of more taxes.
