Intel.WiFi standards..why don't you go check out who voted for various 802.11 standards and clarify this statement

I thought that I responded to this post a few days ago,but somehow it got lost.

I agree that Intel did not participate in the initial of 802.11 standards at all.In fact Apple first introduced the 802.11 in its laptops by some years as "Airport Network", and did not get significant mileage.The problems was that the standard was poorly defined and the there were "interoperability problems" ie pieces of 802.11 hardware from different vendors would not talk to each other. In addition the number of 802.11 sites was extremely limited.

Intel tackled all these issues. It setup labs and procedures for interoperability testing, and provided the "WiFi Certification Labs", and the compliance stamps. Intel Capital seeded various companies all around the world to provide WiFI services.

So finally when the Intel Centrino platform was introduced it became a compelling experience for the consumer,and the the consumers expectation of a Laptop have been redefined.The 802.11 market exploded as well. This has led to the massive growth of the Laptop Market. I expect the WiMax to make the Laptop even more compelling.

Yes a "monopoly" can do good for the world as well.
