However, self-protection is the the universal argument for their use. This is an interesting twist on the subject. Target shooting - riding horses in Alaska (and other places) during high bear activity - not to mention handgun hunting - a very popular sport now days. My uncle always carries a .45 in bear country when blackberry picking - lots of bears around at that time. Handguns are used everyday for defensive purposes and everyday for illegal - but the defensive uses far out number the illegal. But a tragedy avoided is just not news, except in rare circumstances.
