consumers flocked to 3rd party boards that used SDR and DDR

True, but only because Intel failed to stop Via from selling a DDR chipset!

Yes, Intel tried to get a restraining order Via because they said
Via did not have a bus license. Fortunately for the industry, Via
cleverly bought the ashes of a dead graphics company that had a
bus license. Otherwise, consumers would not have had the option.

Look, there's absolutely no question that AMD's success has had
a hugely positive impact on consumers, and a hugely negative
effect on Intel's overall profits and profit margins. To suggest otherwise
is laughable.

Unfortunately for the industry, AMD foolishly piled on a huge debt
with ATI, underestimated Intel and executed poorly on Barcelona.
All that will likely result in AMD being crippled or dead very soon unless
they can pull a rabbit out of their hat. And when that happens, Intel
will go back to historic or better profit margins with obvious consequences
for its stock price.
