Elmat, I think the president of Senegal is wishing for American tourism dollars and American investment dollars.

Going to see where your ancestors came from is fashionable in the US.

Historically, people descended from African slaves didn't know where their ancestors came from, very few records exist.

Now they can do genetic genealogy, like Oprah did.

And there are also a lot of recent African immigrants in the US who maintain ties with the old country.

Africa is "cool" now -- see, e.g., Bono.
