Chris, my reply was directed at ADSL technology. I never said the telco's would not deploy HFC. My belief is that there is room for many technologies, and there is no clear cut winner now. Your comment that cable has a big jump on ADSL is meaningless until it is DEPLOYED SUCCESSFULLY! I have heard the cable trial in New York state was a disaster. It might have been the @home trial. The analyst reports that I have read indicate ADSL will eventually outnumber cable modems by the year 2000. The reports came from either Forrestor or DBC, I forget which. These are not amateurs writing the reports, the companies earn obscene amounts of money from the clients that pay for this research. Of couse, it is still just best guess, albeit from professionals.

There is no doubt that some telcos will likely deploy hfc. A very likely scenario is that telcos deploy ADSL in particular locations until a switched broadband network is in place. Then they move the existing equipment to another spot for redeployment. No forklift upgrade, best use of existing resources.
