What would you have done differently?

Lots of things, but societal control is not my area of expertise. The main thing would probably have been more planning - greater border control, more Arabic speaking capability among the coalition forces, turn the country into more of a police state (curfews, lots of military/security presence, limited speech) in the beginning rather than the immediately free society and gradually eased in freedoms of speech and movement as security allowed, stuff like that. Hand over political control to the Iraqis faster than happened. Hand over policing responsibilities to Iraqis faster than happened. Stuff like that comes to mind, but as I said, society control is not my field. The post invasion Mission Accomplished operation seems to have been made up on the fly from what I can tell. The US army is great at destroying things, but building things (the post mission accomplished part of the operation) doesn't seem to be their forte.
