I sometimes think of Jim Rogers who in early 1980 shorted gold at $650 an ounce before it went north of $800, but held on and did quite well.

Based on my observations that everything seems to be rising and falling more or less together and that in this inflationary environment precious metals will outperform the SPX, I am long gold and silver mining/exploration stocks and short some SPX as a hedge. So far this has been working well and I am hoping for an opportunity to buy more golds and sell my SPX shorts since we have recently been having just the opposite.
