"I bet a thousand millicents that the Apple logo would be completely
unrecognizable to the averge latin-american, african or east asian"

"Latin American" like the jungles of Brazil and Columbia? - There's a project out there called Maya Quest where archaeological researches trek through the jungles on mountain bikes and gain access to hard-to-reach ruins. There, they establish small satellite uplinks connected to Quic Cams on Mac Powerbooks. They broadcast their findings live to classrooms in Brooklyn, NY where 4th graders direct the researchers to zoom in and sometimes dig in certain spots. The ultimate in tele-presence and Virtual learning. What makes this interesting is that the researchers cannot afford to lug a tech support person with them to fix Windows errors and crashes. So they chose Macintosh. The natives of these jungles have been awed by the Apple technology in a place where Windows has never been.

"East Asian" How far East - as in India? I believe Apple is the only OS out there that has the Indian language character sets (correct me if I am wrong - maybe MSFT has caught up). Or do you mean closer to our West Coast? Like Singapore? A huge nation of immense wealth that is only now beginning to establish a telecommunications infrastructure that may in a few short years surpass what we have in the United States. All of their AT&T/Lucent Technologies employees that I have met used Macintosh Powerbooks and we at Lucent had to accomodate their needs for computers running Claris FileMaker Pro here in the East Coast U.S.

"Africa" Okay, you got me there. But Apple bashers often point out Apple's "elitist" attitude. Where else can you find a greater bunch of elitist snobs that white-Sout Africa? I've also seen some Egyptian oil magnates who use Apple computers. Wasn't there some big shiek out there who even invested in Apple? I had a friend who is helping establish a Telcom infrastructure in Mozambique. She tells me that the people there have no idea what telephones are. When a telephone pole falls down, the village women flock to it and pull down the wires to make copper jewelry. No doubt, a computer case would make an excellent cooking pot! I wouldn't want to bring a Mac there. However, when I was in Signal Officer Basic with the US Army, One of the military delegates from Mozambique offered me $4,000 for my four-year-old Mac SE-30! I'm only guessing he recognized the quality label and wanted to bring it home to his village.

Just my two cents. :)
