The thread you responded to was in the context of pre-existing condition clauses. Your hospital would happily welcome you at the door without insurance if pre-existing condition clauses were illegal, as you could purchase insurance from a vending machine in the lobby with no penalty for having not carried it to date. Of course this won't work, which was the point of the discussion. For some reason, various people didn't understand why it would not work.
