Chrétien undergoing heart bypass surgery

Jean Chrétien is undergoing heart bypass surgery, CBC News is reporting.

The former prime minister is expected to make a full recovery from the surgery, being conducted Wednesday morning.

Mr. Chrétien had cancelled an address in Vancouver on Tuesday because of health problems.

The 73-year-old, who led Liberal governments for a decade after crushing the Progressive Conservatives in a 1993 election, was supposed to speak to an Asia-Pacific mining conference luncheon Tuesday.

But organizers say he cancelled at the last minute after feeling sick and being advised by his doctor not to travel from his home in Ottawa.

Mr. Chrétien, who rose to prominence as a minister in Pierre Trudeau's government, stepped down as prime minister and Liberal leader in 2003 amid infighting with eventual successor Paul Martin and the so-called sponsorship and Shawinigate scandals.

Since retiring from politics, he has returned to law with the prominent firm of Heenan Blaikie, toured on the lecture circuit and this year published a second volume of his autobiography covering his years as prime minister
