I think the future in the middle east might be progressive islamic states. Those that are now repressive like Iran may very well change gradually allowing more and more democracy, not less along with basic human freedoms. To foster this, it is imperative for the US to be steadfast but not totally hostile, tough but not confrontational etc. etc.
